Amaya Lobato Rivas is a photojournalist based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her long-term work focuses on community storytelling, documenting the cultural and sociopolitical dynamics that shape her environment.
She holds an honors bachelor’s degree in Media and Professional Communications and a minor in Film and Media Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. She studied Documentary Photography and Photojournalism at the London College of Communications at the University of the Arts in London for a semester.
Amaya has interned at PublicSource and Pittsburgh Media Partnership. She was also a photographer and the assistant visual editor of The Pitt News and a photojournalist for SITI GIRL Magazine Pittsburgh. She participated in Audiovisual Vocational Training Workshops offered by the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico.
Her published photo essay won first place in the Nonfiction Category of the University of Pittsburgh English Department Writing Contest. Her photographs have also won first place for Single-Spot News Photograph in the 2024 Columbia Scholastic Press Award and second place for News Photo in the 2024 Student Keystone Media Award.
Amaya Lobato Rivas es una fotoperiodista basada en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Su trabajo a largo plazo se centra en “storytelling” comunitario, documentando las dinámicas culturales y sociopolíticas que transforman su entorno.
Tiene una bachillerato con honores en Medios y Comunicación Profesional y minor en Cine y Estudios de Medios de la Universidad de Pittsburgh. También estudió Fotografía Documental y Fotoperiodismo en el London College of Communications de la Universidad de las Artes de Londres durante un semestre.
Amaya hizo internados fotoperiodísticos en PublicSource, Pittsburgh Media Partnership y SITI GIRL Magazine Pittsburgh. Fue fotógrafa y editora visual asistente de The Pitt News. Además, participó en los Talleres de Formación Vocacional Audiovisual del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico.
Su foto ensayo obtuvo el primer lugar en la categoría de No Ficción del Concurso de Escritura del Departamento de Inglés de la Universidad de Pittsburgh. Sus fotografías también obtuvieron el primer lugar en la categoría de Fotografía de Noticias de un Solo Lugar en el Premio Columbia Scholastic Press de 2024 y el segundo lugar en la categoría de Fotografía de Noticias en el Premio Estudiantil Keystone Media de 2024.
